Ken, I'm sorry, I've been gone for a while and didn't know you were in hospital. Take care, and I hope all goes well. Best wishes, my friend.
As for the deniability of SAMs... that's true for man-portable, like Stinger. It's not true for the rest (The US has only two active systems, Patriot and a ground-based version of the Aim-120 AMMRAM.) and both have very unique (and thus identifiable) emissions signatures. - unless, of course, we happen to have some captured non-US SAMS in a warehouse somewhere.
War (even when cold) is a game for survival. Putin can only be America's friend after he gets a bop in the nose. That's how it always works with bullies. Putin isn't puttin' professional soldiers in East Ukraine (wink, wink) and those heat seakers are not the droids you seek.
We used to have a CIA that didn't sit on their butts watching satellite feeds.
Ken, I'd agree with you if anyone but Obama was in the white house. However, with Obama there, it changes the equation; Putin may well estimate that if escalates enough, Obama will fold. It doesn't actually matter if he's right or not; it's the perception that matters. So, we've got a vastly more volatile situation that something like this would normally be.

Gotta agree.
