Oversupply and multisource

Stating the obvious: Life support is important in space.

This unit scrubs the CO2 from the air. Which is fine for a ship but needs to be really simple and robust if we are to have large numbers of people living on places like mars.

I was struck while reading this article on the importance of redundancy. I'm thinking experience will prove a better teacher than analysis ever will. We can do this. We can do this now.

When it comes to CO2 scrubbers, I keep remembering Apollo 13; they had a very simple system. It was just canisters of lithium hydroxide and a fan to push air through.

Had they had a more complex system, they probably would not have been able to jury rig it as they did.

IMHO, if the CO2 scrubber is using a consumable, then make the system as simple as possible. If in the other hand it's not using consumables, then absolutely, redundancy is the way to go, but still make it as serviceable as possible.

I have to admit, I'm a fan of the design approach Inspiration Mars seems to be using; make everything as simple and serviceable as possible. I'm not fond of heavily integrated systems.
